CB Career Acceleration

CB Career Acceleration is a program of the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce to help you remove barriers that might be preventing your from getting some continued education or training in a desired career track of your choice. This program is focused on our residents that are currently under or unemployed that are looking to start a skilled career.

The CB Career Acceleration provides opportunities for participants to start at any education or skill level and have a pathway of education all the way to employment opportunities. The program will provide financial support for each participant’s path.

Consider Iowa Western for any type of learning you’re interested in, either for personal interest or career advancement. Our adult education services include:

  • HiSET preparation,
  • career advising,
  • review of reading, writing, and math skills,
  • HiSET Academy,
  • specific skills training such as keyboarding or using measurements, and
  • survival English for English as a Second Language (ESL) students.

During orientation, students are assessed in reading and math.  After discussion and consultation, students are then assigned to a class that best meets their needs. Iowa Western serves a seven-county area providing Adult Education services at the Iowa Western campus in Council Bluffs, and the Iowa Western Centers in Atlantic, Clarinda, Harlan, and Shenandoah. A $25 registration fee is due at the time of registration and is valid through June 30.

Redefine your success with a high school equivalency diploma.

Iowa Western offers preparation courses and exam opportunities for adults to take the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), formerly known as the GED.  The High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) is equivalent to a high school diploma. Our staff will be with you every step of the way, providing guidance and support. Choose a location and class schedule that fits your needs.

The ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate (ACT WorkKeys NCRC®) is an assessment-based credential issued at four levels. The NCRC measures and certifies the essential work skills needed for success in jobs across industries and occupations.

When you require or recommend the ACT WorkKeys NCRC from your applicants, you'll tap into the most qualified labor pool in your area.

The credential is awarded in four levels and verifies skills proficiency in:

  • Problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Reading and using work-related text
  • Applying information from workplace documents to solve problems
  • Applying mathematical reasoning to work-related problems
  • Setting up and performing work-related mathematical calculations
  • Locating, synthesizing, and applying information that is presented graphically
  • Comparing, summarizing, and analyzing information presented in multiple related graphics

The certificate is awarded in both English and Spanish.

Child Care Ready by CCR&R is designed to help individuals seeking a career in early childhood education. This accelerated professional development series includes coaching, mentorship and best practices, that will help individuals to become Child Care Ready! Child care providers will be able to serve children and families in your community while making an income from home. This educational series offers all the pre-certification training required to start as child care center staff or start a home child care business. The Child Care Ready series can assist communities in building child care solutions.

The Council Bluffs Public Library has an in-depth list of all community resources. The resource page is easy to navigate by subject or audience. The resources each have a brief overview of services proved, a link to their website and some have direct contact information. If you have a challenge, barrier, or insecurity, know that you have a whole community behind you and ready to assist.

All Community Resources

The Council Bluffs Public Library has a list of external resources that can assist you with your job & career search. The services include LinkedIn Learning (free through the library), Brainfuse (a free online assistance to help review and give suggestions on your resume), and Learning Express (a site that has sample tests to help you prepare).

Job & Career Assistance

Another service provided by the Council Bluffs Public Library is your access to the Author Chat Book Club. Each month there are new books and author chats, every month one of the chats is focused on financial or career assistance.

Family and Child Care Services

Their network of Family Support providers teams up with parents to help families thrive. They do this by bringing evidence-based or researched informed curriculums to make sure children are developmentally on track.  They have programs with areas of expertise in the medical field with nurses on staff, experienced staff in mental health and trauma, or bilingual staff members. they have a simple referral process with a single point of entry and can get a family to the program that will serve them best based on their referral form assessment.
